DAY 5: HE WAS VICTORIOUS OVER DEATH
Isaiah 25:6-8, Luke 24:1-35
Ever longed for good news? In Isaiah’s day, the people of Israel were living in fear of Assyria, feeling completely insecure. Into this dire situation, Isaiah prophesied that one day the Lord would host a feast for the nations on Mount Zion. Why the feast? Because He will swallow up death forever and wipe away each person’s tears!
700 years later, God’s people were waiting for Him to fulfill His promise. Those who hoped that Jesus might be the One to do so were disappointed when he died a criminal’s death. Two of His followers were walking and talking about it when the risen Jesus joined them. Jesus explained how the Messiah’s suffering and death were a necessary part of God’s plan. He showed them how Jesus fulfills the entire Old Testament, including the promise to defeat death. Then, as they broke bread, they finally recognized Jesus!
Life is still hard. We still feel vulnerable. But because of Christ’s death and resurrection, we have a hope that is both real and unending! One day we will feast at the Lord’s table with the nations. As we enter his house, the Lord Himself will dry your tears. This is the incredible news of Easter!
REFLECTION
- Can you remember a time when God met you in your hopelessness? What happened? How might recalling that bring you encouragement now or in the future?
- In His suffering, death, and resurrection, Jesus has won a decisive victory over death that He gives to those who trust in Him. What can you do to dwell on this truth so your heart takes courage in Christ?
- Who in your life needs the hope of Jesus? What step is the Spirit prompting you to take toward sharing that hope?
PRAYER
Almighty Father, thank you for keeping your promises. Thank you that your Son Jesus has won the victory over death. As we wait for Him to return and swallow up death forever, help me to be anchored by the hope of Christ and share Him with others. Amen.
